Life Reflection – Mohammed Shahid Ullah, FCA

A Journey Shaped by Responsibility, Ethics, and Experience

“Finance is not only about numbers—it is about judgment, trust, and long-term responsibility.”

When I look back on my journey, I see nearly three decades of professional life shaped by responsibility, learning, and constant adaptation. Over the last 30 years, I have had the privilege of working across banks, insurance companies, and NGOs, experiences that exposed me to finance not just as a profession, but as a force that directly influences people, institutions, and the economy.

From Accountancy to Leadership

I began my career in accountancy and auditing, where precision, discipline, and ethical conduct were essential. Becoming a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) marked a commitment to uphold professional integrity—one that continues to guide my decisions today.

Banking, Risk, and Real-World Finance

My banking career provided extensive hands-on exposure to:

1. Corporate, SME, retail, and project financing

2. Structured and specialized lending

3. Credit risk assessment and loan portfolio management

I also worked closely with international trade finance, including letters of credit, guarantees, foreign exchange operations, and cross-border regulatory compliance.

"Profitability matters—but sustainability depends on risk discipline and governance."

Broader Perspectives: Insurance & NGOs

Working in insurance strengthened my understanding of long-term risk, liability management, and financial resilience. My experience with NGOs added a different dimension—exposing me to the social purpose of finance and the importance of inclusion. These experiences reinforced a core belief:

"Financial systems must serve people, not the other way around."

Current Role & Responsibility

Today, I serve as Deputy Managing Director (DMD) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a large commercial bank. This role demands foresight, clarity, and the courage to make difficult decisions in uncertain environments.

I see myself not only as a financial leader, but as a custodian of trust—responsible to shareholders, regulators, employees, and customers alike.

An Ongoing Journey

This journey is far from complete. It continues—not driven by ambition alone, but by purpose:
to apply knowledge, experience, and ethical judgment in service of stronger institutions and a resilient financial future.
