Sakīnah & Imtiḥān: The Serenity of Faith and the Test of Life
A reflection on two dimensions of the human journey through the Qur’an
Life moves between Sakīnah (سَكِينَة)—the tranquility Allah places in the heart—and Imtiḥān (امْتِحَان)—the test through which our faith, patience and character are examined.
The Qur’an describes Sakīnah as a special tranquility bestowed by Allah upon the hearts of believers.
Allah says: “It is He who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their present faith.”— Surah Al-Fath, 48:4
Sakīnah does not mean a life without difficulties; it means a heart that finds steadiness in Allah even when life becomes uncertain.
Imtiḥān, or testing, is a reality of human existence.
Allah declares: “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”— Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155
Tests may come through hardship, illness, financial loss and disappointment. They may also come through wealth, success, authority and comfort. The question is not merely what happens to us, but how we respond, with patience, gratitude, integrity and trust in Allah.
The beautiful relationship between these two concepts is that Imtiḥān tests our response, while Sakīnah strengthens our hearts. A believer may experience anxiety or sorrow and still remain faithful. Tranquility is not the absence of tears, it is the presence of trust amid tears.
The Qur’an reminds us: “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.”— Surah Ar-Ra‘d, 13:28
Therefore, when life tests us, we should not assume that Allah has abandoned us. We should turn towards Him, examine our actions, fulfil our responsibilities and remain hopeful in His mercy.
The ultimate wisdom: We may not choose every test that enters our lives, but we can strive to choose our response. Let our trials deepen our faith, our blessings increase our gratitude, and our hearts remain connected to Allah.
May Allah grant us Sakīnah in our hearts, Ṣabr in our Imtiḥān, and gratitude in every season of life. Āmīn.
